WOWI Hand-Over – 12June2023

What a year for WOWI!  Moreover … this Could be “What a year for WOWI coming from my perspective of a busy Spring/Summer 2023!“.  Yeah, too long.  Let’s go with the first one.

Let’s get current with some updates on where WOWI’s been, where it’s at, and where it’s going…
(Settle in — this could be a long one …)

As WOWI fans far and wide are aware, there was a significant change to the podcast earlier this year.  My friend, Tom Trimbath — the estimable Co-Founder, Co-Host, & Episode Planner — decided to move on from the show due to work commitments*.  After nearly four years of producing Writing On Whidbey Island, we met for our last recording at the Coupeville Library in April 2023.  As Tom became our first emeritus co-host, we discussed the future for Tom’s literary creations and for WOWI.
(* Whidbey Island is not free of the gossip network — therefore, to be entirely clear …  Tom left the show for work commitments only.  In the bigger picture I suspect this could be filed under the heading of ‘Personal Life Balance’; I respect this and find challenges with it myself.  There was no conflict between Tom and myself.  We are still friends and keep in touch.  If you hear otherwise, it’s malarkey.)

So what’s that picture of you two about?!?

12June2023 – Tom and Don at the Coupeville WA library, holding intense business negotiations for the value of the WOWI website with gluten free cookies — Mmmm …. COOKIES!

The WOWI website and domain name have technically been Tom’s property.  The site was on his hosting space, and he was paying the annual bill for WritingOnWhidbeyIsland.com (for the record, I’m the one who came up with the clever name).  Just in case there ever was any question, Tom felt he needed to ‘sell’ it to me.  On record.  For at least a dollar.  So, in June, Tom and I met again at the Coupeville library (see — everything’s good between us!).  “But WHY?!?”  Because neither of us wanted to deal with ‘money between friends’, we agreed that I would make and present him with a batch of gluten free cookies.  They were Ginger Citrus as I recall.  We also sealed-the-deal with a handshake, as gentlemen.  One of the librarians was also kind enough to help us with some photo evidence.  S0… I am now the ‘sole owner’ of all things Writing On Whidbey Island — the domain name, the website, audio content — everything… ULTIMATE POWER!!!

The Change Came at an Awkward Time

Nothing against Tom — he needed to do what he needed to do — but this hand-over of WOWI came at an awkward time.  (Somehow I’m guessing you already knew that…)  For the past five years I have been performing seasonal work as a SCUBA diver.  These jobs have taken me off island and away from home for weeks at a time.  This is also the beginning of my busy season as a Highland bagpiper in the local Scottish community.  Busy + Busy = BUSY … I’ve done the math!  Typically, Tom would take over all administrative aspects of producing the podcast during these months.  Communications, booking, and writing blog posts.  All I had bandwidth for was showing up to the scheduled session, recording, and getting the finished podcast to Tom for upload.

Tom’s departure left me with a choice — wrap up WOWI or continue?  As the saying goes … The Show Must Go On!  While this podcast is still ‘young’, it has proven to be ‘small-but-powerful’.  Not only has it been getting known as a local entity, we have heard from folks afar.  I feel it is too important to go away — so until I see otherwise, WOWI Must Go On!

Although, considering what would need to happen for this podcast to continue,  it was immediately clear to me that WOWI would need to go on a Spring/Summer 2023 hiatus.

To continue Writing On Whidbey Island, I would need to find at least one new co-host.  Taking Tom’s suggestion during our last recording session, I felt it would be good to recruit a small team of co-host personalities — and to better balance bringing some women into the lineup.  After a short search, contacting past guests I most enjoyed, I got lucky and THREE STELLAR INDIVIDUALS Soon Said YES!

Lauren, Sarah, and Daniel will be coming on the show during the coming months.  I met with Sarah and Lauren in June and August and recorded two WOWI sessions.  One episodes questions the use of Artificial Intelligence in the creative process, the other about taking the active step of retreating for the sake of writing.  Those should be posted within the next few weeks.  The ‘official’ re-debut of Writing On Whidbey Island looks to happen with a September or October session — hopefully featuring the four of us!

Also, if you’re reading this blog post after mid-September 2023 — then the website has been moved to my webhost, re-launched, and given numerous updates.  One more thing for the future of WOWI is falling into place!

During the last three years Tom and I identified improvements we wanted to make to the show — however we never had the time to implement them.  I intend to faze these in along with several several others I have seen as being in the best interest and creative direction of Writing On Whidbey Island.

I am in the process of finding a podcast platform for our sessions.  This should help reach a wider audience and bring enjoyment to a greater body of listeners.  In the meantime, the most recent episodes will be featured directly on the site.  And, since I only have so much hosting space, as a new podcast goes up … the oldest will get take down.

In the coming months look for other additions to Writing On Whidbey Island.  I plan to get some original music to introduce and close each episode, along with establishing various social media profiles.  How about some official WOWI merch to help support the show — travel stickers, T-shirts, travel cups — what would you like to see?  Contact us!

After Tom took his leave, I thought about who might make good new co-hosts.  Long story short, 3 of my favourite former WOWI guests have gotten on board with the show.  Just in the past 2 months, there’s excitement in our emails — and I’m thrilled about what’s to come!  As we spoke, it seemed that we should meet face-to-face and record a ‘trial podcast session’ — also since a hot topic in the writing scene came up between us.

So …

!!!SURPRISE!!!

I’ll be back for your manuscripts!

Lauren Flake, Sarah McCarthy, and I met this past Saturday  at the Coupeville Library.  First, I talked about where WOWI is at and what’s to come.   Then, after introducing each of them, we dove head-long into our topic — the use of Artificial Intelligence in writing and the creative process … is it good, bad, or outright evil!!!

If you are not already familiar, Lauren is a writers group founder and fantasy novelist.  Sarah has authored several physics and fantasy books.  And long-time listeners of course know me as a WOWI podcast founder, along with being a recipe and music history book author.

Interestingly, I went into this session understanding that we each had different levels of understanding as to where this technology is currently at in development.  I though I had a decent level of awareness — and I am comfortable in admitting that I knew considerably less than I thought.  Similarly, I knew that we had 3 different positions about the acceptability of A.I. in commercial arts — making the prospects for this conversation nothing short of dynamic.  In the process of the discussion, and upon learning where my perspective falls within the spectrum of opinion, I am potentially more in support of A.I.’s use than I thought!

March of Man and Artificial Intelligence AI A.I.

Our conversation about authors’ use of A.I. ranged from ‘Is this legitimate creativity?’, to ‘Who holds what amount of the copyright?’, dipped into ‘How will this put people out of jobs?’, and even into ‘Where is this at now and what possibly could the future hold?’  It was a charged conversation, also full of laughter — it was the sort of thing I had hoped for in working with WOWI’s new co-hosts.  YES — I prayed to The Podcast Gods, and the initial results look … GOOD!

And there were no fist-fights!

This first meeting with Lauren and Sarah was nothing short of GREAT!  Hands down, it has me thoroughly excited for WOWI going forward.  When Writing On Whidbey Island gets back into full swing around Fall 2023, I will be pleased to reintroduce poet Daniel Edward Moore as the 3rd new WOWI co-host (he’s also a busy guy).

As for our conversation on A.I. — the podcast should be posted in the coming week.  As for now and the until-Fall WOWI-hiatus … maybe there will be other ‘surprise’ podcast sessions — so keep your eyes & ears here!

PS — Thank you to Sarah for producing the preceding images using A.I. along with the “podcast gods” prompt.  Here are the others she and it created…

Friends don’t let friends
let A.I. write obituaries …

Following the recording session, the three of us continued to talk.  Among other Artificial Intelligence produced graphics, Lauren shared with us this A.I. generated obituary.  Look closely at the photo and writing, and you will see where AI seems to presently imitate what we do but doesn’t yet seem to quite get things right.

Betwixt & Between – An Interim WOWI Recording Session

If only we could all be as happy as Hobbits!

Betwixt & Between – Merriam-Webster.com defines this as “in a midway position; neither one thing nor the other“.  While WOWI is on a bit of a ‘summer hiatus‘ as it undergoes some changes … there have been some developments … and it seems like the right time to give an update.  This won’t be just any-ol’-update … it will also be coming with a preview.

But What Does That Really Mean?

Ehmm…?

Sometime soon*, I will be meeting with an entity that will be a future WOWI co-host**.  My aim for the recording session is to update the listeners of WOWI future plans along with developments***, and to discuss a current Hot Topic**** going on in the writing and publishing world.
* PSST — This is happening tomorrow!
** This is a surprise … well, only sort of
*** This is only slightly a secret for now
**** You’ll have to listen to the podcast, which should publish … ehh, in about a week

Here’s the other thing about all of this …
I’M REALLY EXCITED!!!

Of all the things I want to bring to WOWI and its listeners, the first most important thing on my wish-list has turned out every big as good and better than I possibly could have hoped!   I’ve been SWAMPED, so most of the rest of my to-do list is still in the planning or research stages.  However, long-time-listeners will also see that there has been other bits of progress — like updates to the website!

Watch for the release of this interim podcast episode, and please keep with WOWI as we go forward!

The Future of Writing On Whidbey Island

author
Have you seen this man?

Yes — sad but true — founding host Tom Trimbath has departed from Writing On Whidbey Island.  He helped start something great, and he will be missed — first and foremost by me — and I look forward to seeing what develops for him as he continues his writing and publishing journey!

However, you might be asking yourself …
What is the future of WOWI?

And I might reply … that I don’t have a whole lot of time to go into that right now — but … as the saying goesThe Show Must Go On!

Tom has handed Writing On Whidbey Island over to me.  With this, I see an opportunity to bring some new elements to the show — many of which are things Tom and I have wanted to do, but just haven’t had the time to develop.  I intend to have guest hosts  join me to discuss writing topics and to interview individuals from our island writing community.  The suggestion has been given to include unique intro and outro music to the show — something I was already looking into!  In time, I plan to move the audio to a podcast platform so that more people may become aware of and benefit from WOWI.  How about WOWI merch — stickers, T-shirts, etc?  I hope to also create and maintain a few social media profiles — probably Twitter and Facebook.

And the future of WOWI will happen … In The Future!

Hello, my name is Don, I’ll be your Highland bagpiper for today.

As you’ve heard in our earlier podcasts — this is the beginning of my annual seasonal work — otherwise known as my Busy Season.  Typically, Tom has done most of the heavy-lifting behind the scenes at this time of the year.  Right now, I am unable to juggle work and rolling from 50% production of the podcast to 100% management — so I need to take a little break!

My plan is to resume Writing On Whidbey Island later this year — probably around Fall.  Meanwhile, I intend to work on my plans above and begin to put these new show elements into place.

Please enjoy the past episodes in the meantime, and I look forward to you rejoining WOWI in the coming months.

Amy Gulick with Salmon In The Trees

Amy Gulick outdoor nature photographer author Alaska salmon treesWhat do you know about the natural cycle of salmon? What do you know about finding funding for storytelling? Amy Gulick is an islander who has stories to tell about salmon and about how she approached her mix of advocacy, community, and funding.

Amy had won enough awards for her photography and writing that the list would probably be longer than this post. She’s a writer, yes. She’s a photographer, obviously. But she identifies as a storyteller who has been telling stories in words and images since she was a child. Children tell stories. It isn’t until we’re adults that we apply labels like writer or photographer.

Her two main books are “Salmon in the Trees” and “The Salmon Way“. Not a surprise, she knows a lot about salmon, but has also witnessed how salmon return to their spawning grounds, but also their carcasses return nutrients to the plants and animals along those streams. She’s also witnessed the impact salmon have on communities, families, people.

Storytelling is an art. Storytelling for advocacy is a finer example of it because there are consequences to the story. Advocates advocate, so the telling of a story can hopefully encourage action directly, or at least awareness that can indirectly lead to action.

Her process may be useful, too, because there are many reasons and many topics for advocacy. Got something you want to advocate for? Listen in, and at hear from someone who can tell stories so well that it makes for an engaging interview.

In the words of co-host Don Scoby, learn how to; “Tell Your Own Damn Stories”.

The Show Must Go ON!

200314_quarantineCONTRARY to my recent WOWI blog post saying that Tom and I may need to put a hold on the show, we’re devising an idea how we could go forward during the Cornonavirus quarantine!

This past Monday I rigged-up my gear and met Tom in a video chat — our intention being to record a 1-off WOWI episode — both to see how using this medium might work and to discuss how how being in quarantine affects writers.  Frankly, going into this … I didn’t expect much — and yet, what came out of it was an intriguing show running over an hour long!

“How do the adjustments we are making and disruptions we are dealing with make for opportunities, affect work and art later on, what is yet to come for the world of the day-job worker?”

The “Yellow Jack” or “Lima” signal flag is flown on ships in harbor to indicate that a vessel is under quarantine.

On Wednesday I e-met with Tom again with two purposes in mind.  One was to test an improved set-up with my gear — which produced technological success.  The other was to further discuss continuing the show from QuarantineVille.  Our aim at this point is to try and host 1 to 2 guests each month over video chat — and we each have a few authors in mind to ask.

Phirst Poet Podcast with D.E. Moore

2a786495b824a8c6-danielmoore_91Next Tuesday Tom and I will be hosting Daniel Edward Moore on WOWI — our phirst poet podcast!

Over the last number of decades, Daniel is an award-winning poet whose works have appeared in some of the country’s most prestigious literary journals. Additionally he is the author of “Confessions of a Pentecostal Buddhist“, “BOYS“, and his latest book “Waxing the Dents” published only weeks ago (01Feb2020).

Together with his wife, Laura, they manage the Oak Harbor Poetry Project, which began its third year January this year.  It’s held at the Oak Harbor Library where they also have featured poets and — as Daniel told me — “a wonderful open mic tribe!!”

On a personal note… I’m excited about Tom’s and my meeting with Daniel!  Poetry is where I found my voice as a writer — these have mostly been decades of private scribbles, I’ve not pursued public presentation with this work — so I look forward to hearing the writing experiences of a published poet.  A few years ago a poetry/author friend of mine, Von, put forth a question to me — asking about how poetry exists now having gone from the printed page to e-books.  Daniel’s books are also available as e-books …. so let’s find out his take on this!

Restarting Recording in 2020

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Yeah, I’m the sort of character who says it well into January — call it a Scottish thing.

As you will recall from the last blog-post “Interviews Around New Years” Tom and I have made various arrangements toward our next two interviews. One being with Meg, owner of of Kingfisher Bookstore in Coupeville, WA, and the other with Pattie Beaven — author of “The Zoofit Safari” and other inventive workout books.

Neither of these have happened … yet. So what’s up?

A hiccup happened in our meeting with Meg (<– a little alliteration there for ya 😉 ) — something came up and the schedule didn’t work out. Now that it’s the new year, I plan to get things set back up with Meg.
(Look for Meg’s Kingfisher Bookstore on Facebook and Twitter)

As for Pattie … Today is 06Jan2020 and our WOWI meeting date has been 18Jan2020 — the same day that Pattie will be presenting her new book “The Zoofit Safari” between 10 & 11AM at the Whidbey Island Langley Library — “Eat Clean, Live Green, and Train Positive” (<– click for more event information). I was concerned that I was going to need a schedule change, going out of town to do some SCUBA diving work …. yes, in winter … yes, in cold water. That’s not a sure thing yet, so we haven’t changed the date yet. I predict that interviewing Pattie will be WOWI Episode 9.
(Find Pattie at her website EarthConservant.com, books on Amazon, EarthFit on Twitter)

We’ll update you as things come 😀
Don

PS — HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Interviews Around New Years

Our next two interviews are scheduled — and I can’t tell you how EXCITED I am about these!!!

As you will recall from WOWI Episode 7, Tom and I recorded in the future basement floor space of Kingfisher Bookstore in Coupeville, WA. Next week Tom and I will be interviewing Meg — the owner of this cozy book-nook! The first time I met Meg I was impressed to no end — she is a bundle of good energy and has a wealth of all-things-book knowledge. Tom and I are looking forward to talking with her about … well, everything … how she curates her store, her plans to expand, how she engages local authors and readers, and how it is that she makes going into her store Absolutely FUN!
Kingfisher on Facebook and Twitter

Mid-January Tom and I look to spend some WOWI time with Pattie Beaven. With more than 20 years experience as a zookeeper, she brings an interesting approach to fitness. This has lead her to write “Zoo Fit” and a collection of other impressive books. I have had the pleasure of meeting her only a handful of times myself and I can say — when it comes to Pattie be prepared for a unique individual! We will be catching Pattie in conjunction with presenting her new book “The Zoofit Safari” between 10 & 11AM at the Whidbey Island Langley Library — “Eat Clean, Live Green, and Train Positive” (<– click for more event information).

If you see this man, say “Hey, great books!”

This Wednesday Tom and I will be interviewing south Whidbey author and blogger, Dan Pedersen!

Dan is a former Pacific northwest journalist and magazine manager.  When he broke away from city life and joined us here on Whidbey Island he made the personal discovery of writing — and having fun with it!  He started with the topics of nature and rural living and evolved to writing mysteries.

Dan has an impressive list of titles to his name.  Six of these focus on his Whidbey Island detective character, Shane Lindstrom … who occasionally leaves the island to further fight crime!

Our podcast with Dan should be posted by the end of this week — watch for it!

Find Dan at …
